BamaCentral wins first Alabama Sports Writing Association awards

Christopher Walsh of BamaCentral wins six ASWA awards during annual convention

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Christopher Walsh of BamaCentral won six awards during the 2019 Alabama Sports Writers Association Awards Banquet on Sunday night.

They're the first awards the website has received from the longstanding organization.

Walsh won first place for best columns, best enterprise story, best basketball feature and best general sports feature.

He won second place for best softball feature and best sports story writing on a deadline at a professional or college event.

The awards were for the 2018 calendar year.

Walsh submitted a split entry as he spent the first six months of the year working for SEC Country before it folded, and subsequently founded BamaCentral.com as part of the Maven coalition.

The Montgomery Advertiser’s Stacy Long won the Herby Kirby Award, the state’s top sports writing award.

The late Jeff McIntyre of the Florence-Times Daily was the recipient of the Bill Shelton Award.

BamaCentral is the online home for the ASWA. Full results will be posted Monday night.
