Countdown to the Crimson Tide’s 2019 opener:

162 days

Did you notice?

• Alabama volleyball played the first of two spring matches at Foster Auditorium, defeating UAB in four sets 25-18, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-16. The Crimson Tide offense was paced by junior Ginger Perinar’s 11 kills, while junior Hayley McSparin had eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage at the middle.“I thought there was great carryover from the things we were working on in practice and we implemented the key elements well,” new head coach Lindsey Devine said. “We want to be aggressive in everything we do and take our opportunities at the service line to create some out-of-system balls.”

• You have to admit, this is a pretty good photo:

• Former women’s basketball player Quanetria Bolton averaged a team-high 17.8 points and eight rebounds to lead Sport Lisboa Benfica to a 20-2 record and second place in the Portugal-Liga Feminina standings.

Jimmy Nelson will begin the baseball season with the San Antonio Missions, the Triple-A team with the Milwaukee Brewers.

• The Birmingham Iron team site did a profile on Trent Richardson:

• The GM Jr Show with Russ Lande on NFLDraftScout.com previews the running back position for the draft.

Julio Jones is in talks with the Falcons for a contract extension. Jones is set to earn a base salary of $9.6 million in 2019, and $11.426 million in 2020.

• Collin Sexton spent time Thursday working at Cleveland Pour coffee shop. It looks like he may have only served media.

On this date in Crimson Tide history:

March 22, 1942: Assistant coach Ed Hickerson, a regular for the Crimson Tide from 1938-40, was commissioned in the Navy. Hickerson had been hired by Frank Thomas as an assistant coach last August.

Crimson Tide quote of the day:

“We had NFL practices, he kind of ran an NFL program there. As far as the meetings, we were in there all-day learning. Being up early, taking care of business, you have to be responsible. Coach Saban always teaches you to be accountable for your own actions. If you are late you get punished, here you get fined.” – Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones (Alabama 2008-10)
