Freshman Patrick Surtain II gets look in first-team package

Alabama reaches halfway point of preseason with 12th practice

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There was some movement in the Alabama secondary as the Crimson Tide held its 12ththfall practice, reaching the halfway point between the start of the fall camp and the beginning of the regular season.

True freshman Patrick Surtain II was working at the star position with the first unit, while Shyheim Carter appeared to be at a safety position with the second-team nickel package Thursday afternoon.

The rest of the first team nickel group had Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith at the corners, and Deionte Thompson and Xavier McKinney at safety.

The second team had Nigel Knott and Jalyn Armour-Davis at the corners, Jared Mayden at star (the inserted defensive back in place of the strongside linebacker) and Daniel Wright at the other safety spot.

Wright and linebacker Jamey Mosley are both coming off shoulder injuries and wearing supports under their jerseys. No players were in a black no-contact jersey.

Sophomore running back Najee Harris and freshman defensive lineman Stephon Wynn Jr. (ligament strain) remain out.

Alabama was in full pads. The heat index was 101 and players were practicing in the sun while staff workers tried to keep them as cool as possible.

Sophomore Alex Leatherwood was again at right guard with sophomore Jedrick Wills Jr. at right tackle.

New linebacker Ale Kaho was in full pads for the first time as his acclimation period after being a late arrival has ended.
