Practice report: Nick Saban still tweaking things in secondary

Second-team defensive backs have different look as players learn new roles

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Although the installation for Alabamas season opener hasnt begin yet, the Crimson Tide took another step toward playing Louisville in Orlando on Sept. 1 with the technical end of training camp.

With classes set to start Wednesday, Alabama will begin its regular season routine.

The team worked in full pads in sunny, hot conditions. The temperature was 85 degrees, but the heat index was 91.

For the second straight day junior Shyheim Carter was back at the star position, Alabamas nickel-back spot with the first-team defensive backs.

However, there was a new wrinkle with Jared Mayden at safety in the dime package and Xavier McKinney sliding over to be the money (dime back). Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith remained at cornerback, with Deionte Thompson at safety.

The second-team secondary had Patrick Surtain II at cornerback, along with fellow true freshman Josh Jobe. The safeties were Keaton Anderson and Jared Mayden, with Eddie Smith and Daniel Wright shadowing.

Diggs appeared to be learning the star position with the second-team, while working with Kyriq McDonald.

On the offensive line, sophomore Alex Leatherwood was again at right guard and sophomore Jedrick Wills Jr. at right tackle.

Sophomore running back Najee Harris, freshman defensive lineman Stephon Wynn Jr. (ligament strain) and junior offensive lineman Matt Womack (foot) remain out.
