Baylor women open Big 12 with road victory at Texas Tech, Bears fall at TCU.

The Baylor men made a late charge in their Big 12 opener at TCU, but the Horned Frogs prevailed with an 85-81 victory on Saturday in Fort Worth.

TCU led by as many as 19 points, but Baylor chipped away at that edge throughout the second half and had it to a single point when guard Makai Mason completed a 3-point play with 18 seconds remaining.

But the Horned Frogs made 3 of 4 free throws at the end and that was enough to stave off the Bears as Mason and King McClure each missed 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds.

Forward Tristan Clark led Baylor with 18 points and guard Matthew Mayer came off the bench to score 17, including 10 in the second half to fuel the Bears’ comeback.

But Horned Frogs guard Desmond Bane scored 22 points and guard Alex Robinson had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Following the loss in Fort Worth, Baylor will return home for a pair of challenging contests against Iowa State and Kansas.

That’s going to be the norm for the Bears, it appears, as the Big 12 campaign goes on. The conference schedule isn’t going to let up, so it will be interesting to see how well Baylor can scrap.

Lady Bears 73, Texas Tech 56: Baylor coach Kim Mulkey stressed the need for her team to move on from a win over top-ranked UConn last week and focus on Big 12 action.

The Lady Bears did that as they jumped on Texas Tech in the first half and left Lubbock with a 17-point win on Sunday at the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas.

Freshman forward Queen Egbo started her Big 12 career with a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. That alone demonstrates Baylor’s depth as Egbo didn’t play against UConn and then logged 24 minutes versus the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Bears return to the Ferrell Center on Wednesday to host Kansas State and then travel to Fort Worth to play TCU on Saturday.
