WACO, Texas – The Baylor Lady Bears shook off a pesky Iowa State team beginning in the third quarter and rolled to an 84-69 victory over the Cyclones on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.
The second-ranked Lady Bears extended their six-point halftime lead with a 10-4 run to start the second half and never looked back.
Baylor ended up winning the third quarter, 25-12, to take a commanding 19-point lead to the final period.
The key to the Lady Bears’ effort in the third was shutting down Iowa State guard Bridget Carleton after she scored 24 of Iowa State’s 35 points in the first two quarters. Carleton didn’t score in the third and finished the game with 28.
Forward Lauren Cox scored 22 points and led the way as all five Baylor starters scored in double digits. Point guard Chloe Jackson notched her first double-double as a Lady Bear with 11 points and 11 assists. Cox flirted with a triple-double as she had 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Forward Kalani Brown pitched in 18 points and 8 rebounds and guards Juicy Landrum and DiDi Richards scored 16 and 15 respectively.
To top it off, Cox surpassed 1,000 points for her Baylor career in the victory.
Carleton scored 24 in the first half as she alternated taking the ball to the basket and hitting from the outside. She went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, including a trey to cut Baylor’s lead to 36-35 with 1:02 left in the first half.
The Lady Bears responded at the end of the second quarter by scoring five straight on a DiDi Richards layup and a Cox 3-pointer for a 41-35 edge at the break.
Brown led the Lady Bears with 10 points in the first half, while Richards added 9 points and 6 rebounds. Jackson had 8 points and 7 assists in the first 20 minutes.
Baylor extended its defense to keep Iowa State from getting hot from 3-point range. The Cyclones nailed 16 3-pointer in a lopsided win over Oklahoma last weekend, but the Lady Bears held Iowa State to 3-for-13 shooting from beyond the arc in the first half.
Iowa State finished the game making 7 of 25 from 3-point range.
