Cal's hopes of landing New Mexico graduate transfer Anthony Mathis ended Wednesday night, when he committed to Oregon, according to the Oregonian and other media outlets.
Cal's bid was a long shot from the start, as Mathis is from West Linn, Oregon, and he was a high school teammate of current Oregon guard Payton Pritchard. Oregon was considered the leader for his services as soon as he put his name in the transfer portal.
Boston College, Kansas, Houston, Oklahoma and Texas A&M were among the many schools besides Cal that reportedly had shown an interest in Mathis.
Last season, Mathis averaged 14.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists per game and set a program record with 106 made three-pointers while making 41.6 percent of his shots from long range.
