CAL-USF HISTORY: Cal leads 46-30. The teams most recently met on Nov. 18, 2008, when the Bears won 87-74 behind 25 points from Jerome Randle ad 23 from Theo Robertson.
CAL STORYLINES: The Bears are playing their third straight game against a Bay Area team from the West Coast Conference. They beat Santa Clara 78-66 and lost to Saint Mary’s 84-71. … Cal, which ranked last in the Pac-12 a year ago in 3-point accuracy at 28.6 percent, is 10th nationally so far at 42.9 percent. … But the Bears also are 329th in the Division in rebound margin at minus-6.3 per game. … Freshman Matt Bradley’s 3-point shooting mark of 71.4 percent would be leading the nation, except that he does not have enough attempts (10 for 14) to qualify. … This is the start of a three-game homestand, which continues Saturday against San Diego State and concludes a week from Saturday against Cal Poly. … The Bears are ranked No. 207 in the NCAA’s new NET computer rankings (which replace the RPI). They are three spots behind Cal Baptist and last among Pac-12 teams.
USF STORYLINES: The Dons opened the season 7-0 for the first time since 1980, then lost 85-81 to unbeaten Buffalo, currently No. 17 in the AP Top-25, at the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Belfast, Ireland on Saturday. … USF is outscoring its opponents by 22.5 points per game, which ranks 8th in the nation. The Dons also are No. 9 nationally in rebound margin (plus-12.5) and No. 8 scoring defense (57.9). They have held six of eight opponents under 60 points. …Point guard Frankie Ferrari averages 6.5 assists and is No. 7 nationally with a 5.2 assist-to-turnover ratio. … USF checks in at No. 26 in the NET rankings, behind only unbeaten Gonzaga in the WCC.
