Cal Basketball Video: Bears Need a Different Approach from Paris Austin

Wyking Jones says it's imperative that his junior point guard tries to get his teammates involved early in games

Point guard Paris Austin had a tough weekend against the L.A. schools.

As the Bears lost twice more, stretching the losing streak to 14 games and dropping their Pac-12 record to 0-13, Austin struggled against UCLA and USC.

He finished the weekend with a total of 12 points on combined 5-for-18 shooting. He had seven assists and six turnovers, not the ratio a coach wants from his floor leader.

The Bears' struggles certainly don't fall entirely on the shoulders of Austin, the junior from Oakland's Bishop O'Dowd High School. But coach Wyking Jones said he has encouraged his point guard to set a tone when the game starts.

"At the beginning of the game, get your teammates involved," he said. "But he came out looking to get hi. That's now what we need."
