Cal Basketball Video: Kareem South Has Ambitions That Extend Beyond the Court

Beginning work on a Masters degree in public health, South hopes to own his own sports medicine clinic

Kareem South comes to Cal as a graduate transfer from Texas A&M Corpus Christi, where he completed a biomed undergrad degree.

South will play shooting guard for the Golden Bears -- one of just two seniors on the roster -- but he also is at Berkeley to go to school. He picked Cal over two other elite academic schools -- Northwestern and Vanderbilt -- and he will pursue his Masters in public health.

Always interested in science, South says he once thought he wanted to become a physician, specifically an orthopedic surgeon. Now he has taken a different path, and hopes to someday own a sports medicine clinic.

"My passion is sports, so I want to definitely work in the sports field," he said.
