Cal Basketball Video: Mark Fox Vows Bears Will Improve Defensively

New coach says he won't know the team's offensive style next season until the roster is complete

New Cal coach Mark Fox says it’s tough to know exactly what style of offense the team’s personnel will allow the Bears to play next season. Regardless, he says the defense will be better.

“We have to become great defensively, and we can do that no matter if we’re playing man-to-man defense or zone defense,” he said. “We can improve ourselves defensively, and we will.”

They certainly better. Cal ranked 348th nationally (out of 351 Division I teams) in field-goal percentage defense (.489) and 346th in rebound margin (minus-7.0).

In an interview with taped early this month, Fox said he won’t know his team’s offensive capabilities until his roster is set. Since we talked, the Bears lost forward Justice Sueing to Ohio State and center Connor Vanover to Arkansas.

But Cal also has added two more freshman recruits in forward Kuany Kuany and guard Dimitrios Klonaras. The Bears currently project having 10 scholarship players next season, six of them returning lettermen.

It’s refreshing when Coaches adapt to a scheme based on their current personnel rather than trying to force the players to play a specific way.
