Cal athletic director Jim Knowlton, hiring his second head basketball coach in three months, said his department left no stone unturned in its search for Lindsay Gottlieb’s replacement.
“You’d be amazed how many people would love to be the head coach of our women’s program at Cal,” he said before introducing Charmin Smith as the Bears’ new head coach.
Cal talked with head coaches, associate head coaches, assistant head coaches, Knowlton said.
“The thing that was amazing was one name kept coming up over and over again.”
When the two parties met at a hotel in Denver, Knowlton said Smith demonstrated she was a clear choice for the job.
“When this particular candidate walked in the door and talked about her vision, character, accountability, discipline and developing young women on and off the court, it was flat amazing,” he said.
‘And when she showed us her plan on what she was going to do it and how she was going to do it, we were blown away.”
