Bears will now have just one returning starter next season

Kianna Smith, who would have been one of just two returning starters for Cal next season, announced on Twitter Wednesday that she plans to transfer.

A high school McDonald's All-American, Smith was a starter as a freshman and this past season as a sophomore. She was fourth on the team in scoring this season, averaging 9.8 points per game. Smith shot 39.9 percent from the field and 35.0 percent from three-point range.

Smith had some of her best games against the best opponents. She had 16 points while going 4-for-6 on three-pointers in the win over Stanford. She collected 20 points and made 5 of 6 from deep against Oregon, and she had 18 points on 2-of-4 three-point shooting while playing all 40 minutes in the second-round NCAA Tournament loss to Baylor.

She scored 20 points in the first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Virginia last year as a freshman.

With Smith leaving, senior-to-be Jaelyn Brown will be the only returning starter next season. Second-team All-American Kristine Anigwe and guards Asha Thomas and Recee’ Caldwell all used their final year of college eligibility in the season that just ended.

The Bears had a disappointing season in 2018-19. They were ranked 24th in the AP preseason poll and rose as high as 13th when they started the season 9-0. But Cal went 11-13 the rest of the way, finishing at 20-13, including 9-9 in the Pac-12, and had to scramble at the end of the season to make the NCAA Tournament.
