Cal is not changing a lot in terms of its starting pitchers for the three-game series against Arizona State, which starts tonight (Friday) at Cal's Evans Diamond.
Arman Sabouri will start Friay's game for the Bears, although head coach Mike Neu said in the video above that the Bears might "stretch him out." He had been used as an opener, pitching just the first two or three innings before being replaced. But last week against Stanford, Sabouri went five innings, and it appears he will be used in a similar manner tonight.
Jared Horn, who has a 1.79 ERA and pitched seven shutout innings against Stanford last weekend, is scheduled to start Saturday's 1 p.m. game. If that game is rained out, however, he will be moved back to Sunday. Horn was named the Pac-12 pitcher of the week for the second time this season.
Sam Stoutenborough is expected to start Sunday's game for Cal if the series is not interrupted by rain.
Neu is confident in his starters, but said he needs more effective work from his bullpen.
Arizona State (35-14, 14-10 Pac-12) and Cal (29-17, 14-10) are tied for fourth place in the Pac-12, and, at the moment, it appears both are in good position to land postseason berths. Neu addressed the Bears' postseason status in a video.
The Sun Devils are ranked 25th in the Basball America college top 25 rankings this week. ASU leads the nation in homers per game, and the series could feature a lot of home runs.
Here are the pitching matchups for this weekend's series, which is Cal's final home series of the season:
Friday, 6 p.m. -- Arizona State's Alec Marsh (9-3, 3.05 ERA) vs. Cal's Arman Sabouri (2-2, 2.68)
Saturday, 1 p.m. -- Arizona State's Boyd Vander Kooi (4-3, 5.81) vs. Cal's Jared Horn (5-1, 1.79)
Sunday, noon -- Arizona State TBA vs. Cal's Sam Stoutenborough (7-4, 4.04)
