Cal Golf: Bears' Collin Morikawa Dominates the Field to Win Pac-12 Title

Stanford wins men's team competition, Cal finishes third

Cal senior Collin Morikawa started the day slowly but finished strong to capture the Pac-12 individual title in impressive style in Eugene, Ore., on Wednesday. Morikawa birdied each of the final three holes to win the conference medalist honors by four strokes.

Here is a video of his final putt:

Morikawa fired a one-under-par 70 on Wednesday to finish the four-round event at 12-under-par. Kyler Dunkle of Utah finished second at eight-under, and Cole Madey of UCLA was third at five-under-par.

“It is awesome," Morikawa said of the win, according to Pac-12.com. "I’ve always wanted to be in the Pac-12 and go to a school in the Pac-12. I’ve been close, but not close enough the past three years. It’s my final shot and it was all or nothing. So, to finally come out here and make a statement the last three holes was really special.”

He did not seem to be overly bothered by the windy conditions Wednesday.

“It was obviously going to play harder, hitting fairways was going to be a little more important," he said. "It was a tough start, but I knew I had a lot of good golf in me if I kept giving myself chances. I just kept grinding, one shot at a time, which was the mentality for the entire week.”

Cal began the final day leading the team competition, but the Bears ended up third, eight strokes behind champion Stanford.

Morikawa did his best work in Tuesday's third round when he carded a seven-under-par 64. He holed a 100-yard shot for an eagle on the first hole of that round, and that shot can be seen on this video.

Morikawa is the fourth Cal golfer to win the individual Pac-12 title. Cal's Max Homa won the conference title as well as the individual NCAA championship in 2013.

The Bears must await their placement for NCAA Regional event.
