Hammer thrower Camryn Rogers & triple jumper Tuomas Kaukolahti each claim Pac-12 titles

Cal’s Camryn Rogers was a surprise winner in the women’s hammer throw and teammate Tuomas Kaukolahti repeated as champion in the men’s triple jump at the Pac-12 Track and Field Championships on Sunday at Tucson.

Kaukolahti helped lead Cal to a sixth-place finish on the men's side as they tallied 63 points. Rogers and the women's team finished in ninth place with 36 points in long-time coach Tony Sandoval's final Pac-12 meet.

Oregon's men won their 13th consecutive Pac-12 title while the USC women repeated as champions.

Rogers entered the meet ranked third nationally — and third in the Pac-12 — in her event. But she broke her own school record three times, and won the event with a best throw of 228 feet, 11 inches.

Along the way, she broke her own Canadian under-23 record and her final throw was the fifth-best ever by a Canadian woman.

Rogers became just the second Cal woman to win the hammer, joining Jennifer Joyce in 2002.

UCLA’s Alyssa Wilson, ranked second in the NCAA, placed second and collegiate leader Beatrice Llano of Arizona State finished third.

Kaukolahti, the overwhelming favorite in the triple jump, leaped 52-10 3/4 to defend his 2018 conference title. His winning mark was the longest at the Pac-12 meet since 2012.

The junior from Finland he became the third Cal athlete to win the event twice, joining Mike Harris (1989-90) and Lenards Ozolinsh (1995-96).

All six of Kaukolahti’s jumps exceeded the best mark by any other athlete in the field.

Cal junior Parameter Chohan placed second in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a personal-best time of 49.80 that ranks No. 5 all-time at Cal and sixth in the NCAA this season.

Graduate senior Misana Wiltz was fourth in the 110 hurdles in season-best time of 13.86.

Sophomore Iffy Joyner was fifth in the men’s discus at 184-10.

The men’s 4x400 relay of Jasheeer Foster, Diab Davis, Branndon Marion and Chohan ran a season-best of 3:09.23 to finish fifth in the 4x400 relay.

Meanwhile, the Cal women’s 4x100 relay team of Deshae Wise, Zion Corrales Nelson, Maisie Stevens and Jackie Patterson finished third with a time of 44.78 seconds, well back of USC, which won the race in school and meet records of 42.45.

Senior Kendall Mader placed fourth in the women’s discus at 171-8.
