CAL STORYLINES: Cal returns three starters for a team that went 21-11 and lost in the first round of NCAA tournament last season. Three-time all-Pac-12 center Kristine Anigwe has led the team in scoring each of the past three seasons. Kianna Smith and Asha Thomas also return after starting a year ago. Key additions to the squad include point guard Recee Caldwell, a graduate transfer from Texas Tech, and freshman McKenzie Forbes, a McDonald’s All-American. The Bears have won their last six season openers. After the opener, Cal’s next game is Sunday at Penn State.
HOUSTON STORYLINES: Houston returns all five starters from last season’s 20-12 team that lost to South Dakota in the first round of the Women’s NIT. Guard Jasmyne Harris, a second-team All-AAC selection, led the Cougars in scoring last season, averaging 19.6 points per game. She is a 2018-19 preseason first-team All-AAC selection. Houston is not ranked but received votes in the USA Today coaches poll.
