Top story lines: SMU is in year one of Sonny Dykes after the departure of coach Chad Morris to Arkansas. The Mustangs opened the season with a loss to North Texas 46-23, a team who played in last year’s Conference USA championship game. In game two, SMU took on in-state power house TCU and expectedly lost 42-12. The 0-2 record is a disappointing start, but the schedule has been brutal for a first year coach.

SMU is returning quarterback Ben Hicks who had a solid 2017 season with 3,569 passing yards, 33 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Through two games Hicks has thrown for 363 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The leading rusher thus far for the Mustangs is Braeden West. He has 104 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also has added 100 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown.

Defense has been a struggle thus far for SMU under Dykes. They have allowed 44 points per game which is 124th in the nation. Their leading tackler is Patrick Nelson with 19 total tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss.

The Mustangs only won seven games in 2017 but still lost major talent to the NFL. In total, five players from last years roster were at NFL OTA’s. One was second round pick Courtland Sutton, who had two catches for 45 yards in his first game for Denver.
