The #10 Michigan State Spartans started the 18-19 season officially tonight with their opener against #1 Kansas. The scrappy Spartans were far from perfect but gave the #1 Kansas Jayhawks all they wanted as MSU fell 92-87.

The Spartans were led by junior captain Joshua Langford. He had 18 points and four rebounds. Kenny Goins had a double double getting 17 points and grabbing 11 critical rebounds. Cassius Winston also had a doube double garnering 13 points and 11 rebounds. Matt McQuaid rounded out the double digits scorers dropping in 12 points and picking up five rebounds.

The Spartans had a disappointing 18 turnovers that led to 20 Kansas points. Despite letting numerous balls roll around they were not rebounded, the Spartans were surprisingly only lost the battle of the boards by a 42-40 margin.

A frustrated Tom Izzo said after the contest that, “Wow, give Kansas they played better than us. I guess I was disappointed in the firsts half. We had eight turnovers in the first nine minutes of the game. Missed 11 free throws, and I think two front ends of a one and one. I thought that was as poorly as we could play.”

Surprisingly, MSU struggled at the free throw line. The Spartans shot 66%, missing 12. On the night the Spartans shot only 44% from the field. 11 Spartans played in this tilt including four of the five freshmen. Only Gabe Brown didn’t see any action.

Kansas Coach Bill Self said of the contest that, “I thought we did a lot of good things. Take away transition defense I think we did a lot of good things. Obviously, we have to learn to close out the game.”

The Spartans return to action with their first regular season home game on Sunday, November 11 at 6 PM against Florida Gulf Coast at the friendly confines of the Breslin Center. That game can be seen on BTN.
