For several month's Spartan Nation has been hinting that a, "Very well known," Spartan had pledged a major gift for Spartan hockey. We were asked to keep the name quiet and we have. Today it was revealed from this press release via MSU athletics SID Mex Carey. We know of other well known Spartans who have pledged and their gifts should be made public soon. Here is the press release:
EAST LANSING, Michigan – On Friday, June 21, 2019, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees authorized the construction of the Munn Ice Arena Expansion project. In support, Michigan State University men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo and wife, Lupe, have made a $1.1 million gift towards the project, while additionally contributing to the Spartan Marching Band and Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS). This is the second gift of $1 million or more by the Izzo family since 2011.
The Munn Ice Arena Expansion project will provide new areas to benefit student-athletes, including a locker room, state-of-the-art weight room and training areas, shooting bays, and a players' lounge. Additionally, new offices for coaches and staff will be moved above ground, and an expanded concourse will connect a Hall of Honor highlighting individual and team accomplishments to an enhanced pro/apparel shop.
"I'm humbled by this extraordinary gesture by Tom and Lupe," MSU hockey coach Danton Cole said. "This facility is a game-changer for us and I could not ask for a more meaningful endorsement than to have Coach Izzo and Lupe supporting our program."
"Our basketball program is so very fortunate to have the support of many individuals and donors who understand how important facilities and scholarships are to recruiting and competing for championships," MSU men's basketball coach Tom Izzo said. "I've been going to hockey games since I came to Michigan State and those games are some of my greatest memories. The Spartan family is fortunate to have Danton Cole leading the hockey program and we (Lupe and I) are grateful to be able to support our hockey program that is about to take off.
"Additionally, it was important for us to impact and say thanks to our Student-Athlete Support Services department and staff who shape the academic lives of our players and to the Spartan Marching Band who enhance the game day experience for all."
A native of Iron Mountain, Michigan, Izzo recently completed his 36th season with the men's basketball program, including 24 seasons as head coach. Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, Izzo began his Michigan State career in September 1983 as a part-time assistant coach under Jud Heathcote, and is the winningest coach in program history. Izzo led the men's basketball program to the 2019 Final Four, his 8th Final Four as head coach.
"For more than 30 years, Tom and I have dedicated our lives to the Michigan State community, believing in the mission of the university," Lupe Izzo said. "We felt it necessary to re-commit to our university and the greater community that has blessed us in so many ways. Our passion has and remains the betterment of MSU students. Supporting various initiatives that impact a broad audience was important to us."
"MSU Athletics is extraordinarily grateful to the Izzo Family for their leadership, dedication, and commitment to the MSU community," MSU Athletic Director Bill Beekman said. "Through the years, Tom has guided transformation not only on the court through the success of our basketball program, but also has served many roles in guiding MSU into a world-class institution. Along with his wife Lupe, they have made a positive impact on the entire campus and community with their charitable works and gifts."
"Tom and Lupe are both extraordinary individuals who epitomize what it means to be team players," MSU Executive Associate AD/Development Chuck Sleeper said. "It is unique to find a head coach contribute to a program other than his or her own and that's what makes Tom so special. He, just like many of our donors, cares deeply about the success of Michigan State."
