19 MI OL Spencer Holstege Talks Recent Michigan State Visit

19 MI OL Spencer Holstege

Since the end of his junior season at the high school level, Grand Rapids (MI) South Christian 2019 offensive lineman Spencer Holstege has seen his recruitment pick up and landed his first three offers this month and has received interest from several Division 1 programs, including the #15 Michigan State Spartans.

Holstege spoke with Spartan Nation about his recruiting process and he said he’s been hearing a lot from Michigan State lately and admitted that he’s fond of the Spartans and has already built a strong bond with offensive line coach Mark Staten.

“I like it a lot, I have a great relationship with coach Staten,” he said. “I like the university, it’s close to home.”

In his talks with the Michigan State coaching staff, Holstege told Spartan Nation that the Spartans view him as an interior offensive lineman because of his athletic ability.

“They like my athleticism and the way that I pull,” he said. “They like my strength that I’ve shown and I’ve only played the position for a year, so they can mold me into what they like.”

So far in the recruiting process, Holstege holds offers from Western Michigan, Miami (OH) and Bowling Green and, along with Michigan State, has received interest from two other Big Ten programs, Indiana and Minnesota.

Holstege said that when it comes to Minnesota, he likes what head coach P.J. Fleck is building as he enters his second year in charge of the Golden Gophers.

“I like it there, they’re building a great program out there and just starting their second year now,” he said. “I like it a lot.”

Indiana was expected to visit Holstege and South Christian this week.

When it comes to the Spartans, Holstege was recently on campus in East Lansing as he was in attendance for the Spartans’ win over Indiana in basketball action last Friday.

“I liked it a lot, the atmosphere was great, they played really good,” he said. “I got to talk to coach Staten for a little while at the game

The 6-foot-5, 275 pound offensive lineman said that he was also invited by Staten to attend Michigan State’s elite camp this summer.

While he doesn’t have an offer from Michigan State as of yet, Holstege, who grew up a fan of both Michigan and Michigan State, said that an offer from the Spartans would be a big deal for him and his family, considering he has several family members who are Michigan State fans.

“It would mean a lot, because it’s close to home,” he said. “Most of my family is Michigan State fans, so going there would be amazing for them because they would like it a lot.”

But with another year left at the high school level, Holstege said that while he feels he excels at pulling when playing along the offensive line, he also feels there are different areas of his game that he’d like to improve on

“What I do best is being able to pull with my athleticism,” he said. “What I’ve got to get better at is my pass blocking technique and also getting off the ball faster.”
