Coach Mark Dantonio Spending Spring Looking For Ways To Get Play Maker Delton Williams More Involved

Delton Williams was all smiles as a Spartan fullback this spring.

Delton Williams is a terrific young man. He did have some off field issues, but like a man he faced them and was welcomed back to Spartan football with open arms. He is a playmaker and despite what off the field issues would hint at, he is a kind hearted, warm young person.

So with the Spartans log jammed at running back they can’t afford to just let him waste away. He is too important of a player and too good. He is a difference maker. So this spring Mark Dantonio is looking for ways to experiment and get his best 11 players on the field at any moment. That is where the talented Mr. Williams comes in.

Williams is a devastating runner with great hands who doesn’t shy away from contact. Sporting a 6’1” and 230 pound chiseled frame this Spartan not only deserves playing time, but MUST find it. So with the vacancy left with Trevon Pendleton who graduated, Dantonio opens spring searching for the dilemma of how to get Williams more reps, he and he found it.

Williams opened spring on the depth chart at a fullback and I asked Dantonio how his young star is adjusting to the move?

“He looked good. He also played some tailback, so we have to find a way to get him on the field more. Have to watch the film, but he can catch the ball and do some different things like that.”

So with the deep skill set of Williams, do we have a better chance of seeing more designed runs, passes as well as blocking from the Spartan Coach for his new weapon at fullback?

“Yeah I think you have to look at those things and get yourself ready for those things as you move forward. He looked alright.”

Williams has paid his debt to society, and will be back on scholarship this summer and looking towards a bright tomorrow. My late father taught me years ago that you should always root for good people. I know Williams. I like Williams and I totally admit I want to see him do well. He isn’t a statistic, he’s a person and one I like very much.

He also brings a new weapon to the Spartan offense and one that will force other teams to game plan for in many new ways. That is something to think about with a new QB.
