Although offers have continued to pour in for Clinton Township (MI) Chippewa Valley2019 linebacker Marcel Lewis, the 3-star recruit felt it was time to end his recruitment and officially commit to the school he felt was home for him, #5 Michigan State.
Spartan Nation caught up with Lewis to discuss his recruitment and the 3-star recruit said that it was a decision that was weighing on his mind and felt it was the right time for him to announce his decision.
“I couldn’t get any sleep and I kept thinking about it, it kept crossing my mind,” he said. “I just thought it was time for me to say where I wanted to be and Michigan State is where I want to be.”
Before committing to Michigan State, Lewis received 18 offers in the recruiting process, which includes offers from Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Purdue, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Syracuse, and Michigan.
Lewis said that he was excited to be able to tell Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio of his decision, but said that telling his parents was something that was both exciting and relieving to him.
“It was a blessing to me,” he said. “Just telling him that, he was excited when I told him, but when I told my mom and my dad, that was the biggest relief right there.”
Football is something that has obviously played a big role in Lewis’ life during his time growing up and said that he and his parents have spent plenty of time watching the game over the years.
“My dad played football in high school and he always instilled that and we always watched football when I was a kid,” he said. “On Sunday’s, we would watch the NFL - we used to be a huge Peyton Manning family, so we would watch him all day every day. My mom works in the post office and she was with us watching the games and stuff like that, so football was always there for us.”
With his recruitment now in the rearview mirror, Lewis said that he’s turning his attention to being a recruiter for the Spartans going forward and is looking to recruit players from the state of Michigan, specifically Flint Carman-Ainsworth 2019 4-star defensive end Michael Fletcher and Detroit Cass Tech 2019 4-star running back Jaren Mangham.
While Lewis would like for both players to join him in East Lansing, he said he wants each player to do what’s best for them, individually.
“I want them to, but that’s just a decision for them,” he said. “I want the best for them.”
Lewis will be back on campus in June for Michigan State’s Elite Camp and also plans to take part in the Nike Opening this summer as well.
A 6-foot-1, 205-pound standout is capable of playing both middle and outside linebacker at the next level and said that the Michigan State coaching staff has told him he could play either the “Star” or “Money” linebacker position and also added that he’s open to playing anywhere when he arrives in East Lansing.
“I could play inside or outside,” he said. “I could play the Star positions or the Money positions, either one of those.”
