Michigan State Star D Torey Krug Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors

East Lansing, Mich. - Spartan junior captain Torey Krug (Livonia, Mich.) has been named the CCHA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday, Feb. 13. Krug and the Spartans are coming off a split of 3-2 decisions with archrival Michigan, a series in which Krug had a hand in four of the five MSU goals scored.

Krug, who has emerged as both a CCHA Player of the Year and All-America candidate, finished his weekend with a 2-2-4 line (+1) against the Wolverines. Krug was the game's first star on Friday, netting both goals to pull even after the Spartans fell in a 2-0 hole and assisting on Matt Berry's game-winner. On Saturday, he had an assist on Brett Perlini's power-play tally in the second period.

The junior captain was the CCHA's Offensive Player of the week last week, and is the only player in the CCHA to earn both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.

Krug's 28 points ties his career-best offensive season, set last year as a sophomore. He is now sixth overall in the league in scoring and first among defensemen; nationally, he is fifth among defensemen in scoring, and third among "western" (CCHA and WCHA) blueliners. . He owns the team's active point-scoring streak (four games), and has been the game's first star in three of the last four games.

Krug and the Spartans are preparing for the final regular-season series at Munn Ice Arena this weekend, hosting Alaska on Friday and Saturday.
