I know I'm late with this, but I wanted to throw my 2 cents in on the Barry Bonds issue. I mainly want to point out the fact that Bonds is a cheater who doesn't deserve the HR record and that it's not racist to feel this way.
I've heard all of the arguments supporting Barry Bonds: "Barry has never failed a drug test," and "Even if you're on steroids, you still have to be able to hit the ball." Both of these arguments are true. However, there are major flaws in them. First of all, you don't need a positive drug test to prove his guilt. The evidence against Bonds is overwhelming. There are numerous things that I could list off here: His sudden spike in power at an age when others decline, his trainer's ties to BALCO, and the fact that his hat size & shoe size have grown (that's not natural, folks! That's caused by HGH). If you want to know more, check out the book "Game of Shadows." I don't even want to get into it because what I listed off here only begins to scratch the surface. He's a cheater and anyone who refuses to acknowledge that has their head buried in the sand. And even though "you still have to be able to hit the ball" holds true, what Bonds did is still cheating. Let's be real here. Taking steroids and HGH clearly gave Bonds (and others who've taken them) a big advantage. Why else would anyone risk health problems, legal issues/jail time, and the embarrassment that comes with getting caught? There clearly must be a big reward to off-set such a big risk.
I understand why the race issue is brought up. The recent ESPN poll indicated by a pretty wide margin that most blacks are pulling for Bonds to succeed, while most whites are pulling for him to fail. In spite of this, I'm going to tell you that it's not racist to cheer for Bonds to fail. For one thing, the man that currently holds the record, Hank Aaron, also happens to be black (and I want him to keep that record that he EARNED). Even if Bonds breaks the record, Aaron will still be the true HR champion in my mind. He broke the record without using performance enhancing drugs, overcoming all kinds of adversity and pressure, and did it all with class. Bonds, on the other hand, has lied, cheated, and treated people like crap along the way.
I think the reason that many think that this is a racial issue is because there's a perceived "witch hunt" against Bonds. Personally, I don't think it's a witch hunt. Bonds has brought this all upon himself. For one, as I pointed out earlier, he has always treated the media (and others) like crap. Why do you think the media portrays him so negatively? It's not just the fact that he's been a liar and cheater. They're just treating him the way he has treated them over the years. And finally, the record he is attempting to break is the most hallowed record in all of sports. It is important to baseball fans that this record not be tarnished, which is exactly what will happen when he breaks it. Allow me to illustrate how big this is. I am an absolute die-hard NFL fan and NFL football is probably the most popular game in our country. I (and most other NFL fans) know that Emmitt Smith is the all-time leader in rushing and Jerry Rice is the all-time TD leader, but don't know exactly how many yards or TDs that they had in their careers. However, even the casual baseball fan knows this name and number: Hank Aaron, 755. If McGwire & Sosa were trying to break this record and behaving the way Bonds has behaved, I would be cheering for them to fail, too. This issue should not be about race. This issue is about Barry Bonds being a liar, a cheater, and a jerk and tarnishing the most famous record in all of sports.
