Michigan State Softball Completes Season Sweep Over Eastern Michigan, Wins 9-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State softball team (25-23) completed the season sweep over Eastern Michigan on Thursday, May 5 with a 9-2 win over the Eagles at Secchia Stadium. Senior Heidi Purtzer knocked in the game winning run in the fourth as she went 2-for-2 on the day with four RBIs.

With the Spartans already boasting a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth, Purtzer hit a bases clearing double off the fence in left to score home senior Lindsey Hansen, and juniors Lori Padilla and Ali Grant. Grant reached base on a walk, while Padilla recorded an infield double over the head of the shortstop. Padilla’s hit scored sophomore Jenny Ramsaier, who made her way onto base off a fielder’s choice, for the first run of the inning. Hansen recorded the team’s third walk of the frame to find her way onto first. The Green and White ended the fourth with a 6-0 lead.

The first two runs of the contest for MSU occurred in the bottom of the third. Senior Karen Fox led off the inning with a single over the third baseman’s head. After Grant reached base on a walk and Fox moved up to second, Padilla bunted into a sacrifice down the third base line, however the third baseman mishandled the throw at third attempting to force out Fox, sailing the ball into left on the play. With the bases loaded and one out, junior Lauren Kramer singled to right center to score in both Fox and Grant to hand MSU the 2-0 advantage.

Trailing to Michigan State 6-0, EMU responded in the top of the fifth with its lone two runs of the game. After the first two batters of the inning reached base off an infield error and a walk, the Spartans proceeded to get the next two batters out on a strikeout and ground out to second, respectively. However, with runners on second and third, Lauren Delapaz doubled with a shot over the head of sophomore Kylene Hopkins in right. Delapaz’s hit scored in Kayla Kostich and McKenna Russ on the play and make it a 6-2 game.

The Spartans sealed the game with a three-run sixth inning. Purtzer knocked in the first run with a single to right field, scoring Grant on the play. Grant led-off the inning with a single to center field. After Padilla moved Grant up to second, Hansen legged out an infield single with the ball hit to second. Purtzer and Hansen became the final two runners of the game to score when junior Brett Williams singled to left field to bring in both runs.

Freshman Cassee Layne earned her 13th win of the season for the Spartans as she pitched 4.2 innings of work. Layne allowed two runs on three hits while posting three strikeouts.
