It’s been quite the start for sophomore transfer Jordan Dail.
The left-hander from Virginia Tech improved to 9-0 on the season when she led Oregon (11-4) to a 6-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara (4-8) in its final game of the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Calif.
Dail threw 6.0 innings and gave up just one run on four hits, striking out five in the process. Maddie MacGrandle took over for Dail and threw a perfect seventh inning to preserve the win.
April Utecht provided more than enough offense for the pitching staff, going 2-for-3 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. She had a two-RBI double in the third inning before her solo homerun in the fifth completed the scoring.
The Ducks began the scoring in the top of the second when Lexi Wagner’s two-out, RBI-single scored Utecht, who reached base with a walk earlier in the inning.
Oregon added two more runs in the third when Shaye Bowden singled in Haley Cruse, advancing to second on the throw home. Utecht’s double then scored Cherish Burks and Bowden for the 3-0 lead.
Bowden added to her RBI total when singled in Cruse again, who reached base on a single and stole second.
Oregon now has one week off to prepare for its toughest tournament of the preseason. The Ducks head south to Fullerton, Calif to play in the Judy Garman Classic — where they’ll play five games in three days, four of which come against nationally-ranked opponents.
