The word is spreading on Twitter and elsewhere on the Internet that Utah State coach Matt Wells has taken the job as Texas Tech’s next head football coach.
Wells led Utah State to a 10-2 record this season and has a 44-34 mark in six seasons leading the Aggies. As Utah State’s offensive coordinator in 2012 and head coach from 2013 until this season, Wells has guided the Aggies to their only double-digit-win seasons in program history.
Wells was one of the top tier candidates identified by Lubbock Avalanche-Journal beat writer Don Williams on Sunday. It’s a good bet that Williams’ source on that short list was Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt.
Whatever opinion Texas Tech supporters have about this hire, remember this: the excitement or lack thereof that Red Raider fans feel about this hire right now have very little to do with success on the football field. It’s Wells’s job now and you can bet he’ll be moving full speed ahead to do the things that will make a difference next fall.
What to watch for: How well can Wells maintain the current players and high school players committed to Texas Tech? What impact can he have in a limited time before the upcoming signing day?
