The Oklahoma Sooners are coming into Lubbock, Texas, after snagging the No. 7 spot in the College Football Playoffs ranking. The offense for the Sooners is still elite even after losing Heisman winner Baker Mayfield.
Oklahoma is 7-1 on the year, and its only loss was a close game to Texas. This will be the third team that Texas Tech has played this season with a player (Kyler Murray) who is in the running for the Heisman trophy. Texas Tech is 1-1 in the previous matchups after defeating Ed Oliver’s Houston team and losing to West Virginia QB Will Grier. Murray, unlike Oliver and Grier, will have to contend with a night-game atmosphere at Jones Stadium.
Here are some guys for the Sooners who have been dominant so far this season:
QB Kyler Murray – Redshirt junior Kyler Murray is as Texas Tech DL Eli Howard describes “essentially a running back that can throw well.” Kyler, who averages almost 300 passing yards per game, accounts for 474 rushing yards – which places him among the top 10 in the Big 12 in rushing yards. He’s completed 73 percent of his passes, going 134 of 183 with 2,329 yards and only 3 interceptions. He’s also posted 34 touchdowns, 28 of those in the air and 6 on the ground. His passer rating is the best among Big 12 quarterbacks with a 227.3.
The wide receivers – Junior Marquise Brown and sophomore CeeDee Lamb have been Oklahoma’s leading wide receivers. Brown has 738 yards on 40 catches with 7 touchdowns and Lamb has 674 yards on 34 catches and 9 touchdowns. Both of these guys rank in the top 5 of the Big 12 in receiving yards (No. 3 and No. 4 respectively).
RB Trey Sermon – The junior out of Georgia ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 for rushing yards. Sermon currently has 516 yards on 89 carries, averaging almost six yards per carry. He also accounts for five touchdowns on the ground. Not only can he run, but he can catch. Sermon has 145 receiving yards on just 9 catches.
BONUS: The linebackers – With an offense as good as Oklahoma’s, it’s easy to overlook the defense. Linebackers Kenneth Murray and Curtis Bolton are the Sooners top two tacklers. Murray has 92 total tackles, 38 solo, 1 pass breakup and 3 quarterback hurries. Bolton is right behind with 88 total tackles, 35 solo, 1 pass breakup, 3 quarterback hurries and 1 fumble recovery.
