FOOTBALL RECRUITING SPOTLIGHT: CB MARKEL REED

Red Raiders land three-star prospect in early June.

Agile cornerback Markel Reed became the 10th commitment the Red Raiders received in the class of 2019. Reed, a native of Temple (Texas), is the 116th ranked cornerback in the nation according to 247Sports. Reed was heavily sought after, and chose the Red Raiders over Purdue, Arkansas, Kansas State, and Baylor.

The lanky 6-1, 166-pound Reed is an extremely fluid cornerback with excellent movement. He doesn’t have the ideal weight for a Division I cornerback, but he has excellent length and range. Reed’s play last season earned him first team all-district honors, and helped the Wildcats secure their fourth consecutive trip to the Class 5A Division regiona; finals.

Reed is also a model student in the classroom. He has a grade-point average of approximately 3.9. Cornell was vying for Reed’s service prior to committing to the Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders would probably like Reed to redshirt next fall. A redshirt year allows Reed the opportunity to add weight to his frame. The Red Raiders are also set to return all of their starting cornerbacks next fall. Expect Reed to have his opportunity in the secondary in 2020.
