Rankman's Picks: Week 1

Yeah, yeah, I'm back for Year 2 despite a rookie campaign that had me tearing up betting slips and screaming conspiracies from coast-to-coast. Let's just say I learned some things along the way. Rankman is older and wise-guy-er. This just in: we've already had our first scratch of the year with Houston at UTSA being postponed in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. This was the right call, all things considered, and it would have been almost scum-baggy to make a tote based on which team would be most affected by a disaster. On to this week's games.

Appalachian State getting 14 at Georgia

Western Michigan getting 27 1\2 at USC

Alabama giving 7 versus Florida State

Troy at Boise State (62)

Texas A&M at UCLA (55 1\2)

Washington at Rutgers (52)

The Picks

Appalachian State at Georgia. This feels like a trap game to me with Georgia looking ahead to Notre Dame. Take the Appies and the 14 points. The Mountaineers won 10 games last year and return star QB Taylor Lamb. App State is a big-game hunter that just happens to be celebrating, this Labor Day weekend, the 10-year anniversary of its epic 2007 win at Michigan. Georgia, remember, last year barely survived Nicholls at Uga's house.

Pick: Appalachian State

Score: Georgia 27-24

Western Michigan at USC. This would be more interesting had P.J. Fleck not rowed his boat to Minnesota, but Western Michigan should be formidable enough to cover 27 1\2 points while Sam Darnold works out the kinks with his new receivers.

Pick: Western Michigan

Score: USC 35-20

Alabama vs. Florida State. Bama by a touchdown works for every other opponent except Florida State. I still like the Tide, but not to roll.

Pick: Florida State

Score: Alabama 24-20

Troy at Boise State—take Over

Texas A&M at UCLA—take Over

Washington at Rutgers—take Over

Record: 0-0

Last year (don’t even ask)
