Rankman's picks: Week 10

Rankman always wanted to go into "business" with one of my sons. Maybe a roadside fruit stand, or a tire store "Don't Tread on Us." Anything not in the newspaper business. We decided on picking games, not strawberries, just for fun at the moment. There is no better quality time spent than the time spent with a child checking the game-time weather reports in places like Pullman or Colorado Springs. It raises goose pimples to think I could answer the question "Dad, if Stanford is 'getting' two points at Washington State that means WSU is favored by two?" Yes, son...YES! Parents don't talk much to their kids anymore so it's been fun sitting around the TV on Saturday screaming together at corrupt officials and coaches who seem to be making every decision based on the Las Vegas line. Some day maybe we will open that fruit stand, but right now my pocket book is filled with grapes of wrath. If you're keeping tally on the TMG pickers you'll notice some of us are doing better than others. But my trade-deadline acquisition of "Child 2" has worked out a lot better than the Dodgers did with Yu Darvish. We're looking for a big rally in the final pennant push drive and a triumphant Game 7 victory that will result in someone getting to kiss Kate Upton. Or, better yet, the L.A. Angels coming to multi-season terms with Justin Upton.

Rankman's picks

UCLA getting 6 1\2 vs. UTAH (Friday)

We're not sure how much, or if, quarterback Josh Rosen is going to play for UCLA. We do know this: This scheduling matchup--a Friday night road game following a Saturday road game--has been a killer for the Pac 12. The road team is 0-5 in such games since 2016. Pac 12 Commissioner Larry Scott is under fire for allowing this but he told the L.A. Times this week the conference may eliminate this scheduling quirk next year. Too late for UCLA tonight?

Pick: Utah

Score: Utah, 31-24

Stanford getting 2 vs. WASHINGTON STATE

Another "mystery meat" special as it is still unknown whether Stanford's star running back, Bryce Love, will play. Stanford Coach David Shaw loves to shield injuries from the media but my guess is Love will be back in the lineup. With Love out last week, Stanford looked horrible in a 15-14 win at Oregon State. However, Shaw has also made another key decision in starting K.J. Costello this week in place of quarterback Keller Cryst. This move alone should give Stanford the fortitude to cover this key Pac 12 North game.

Pick: Stanford

Score: Stanford, 27-24

Northwestern getting 1 vs. NEBRASKA

Wait a minute: The odds-makers are saying Nebraska can't win a home game by the margin of a safety? What's happened to football in the great state of Omaha Steaks? Northwestern pulled off a nice, but exhausting, triple OT win vs. Michigan State last week. I'm taking one last chance on Mike Riley at home before the Lincoln National Bank starts writing checks for Scott Frost.

Pick: Nebraska

Score: Nebraska, 27-25

Over\Under

Arizona vs. USC (72 1\2)

Take: OVER

Baylor vs. KANSAS (61 1\2)

Take: OVER

South Carolina vs. GEORGIA (45)

Take: OVER

Child "locks"

South Carolina getting 24 1\2 vs. GEORGIA

Child "locks" says Georgia's surprise ascension to No.1 in the first College Football Playoff ranking will go straight to Uga's head and cause a bout of cold sweats and clutching up against a Gamecocks' team that has won three straight games. Child "locks" is NOT saying the "other" USC will win.

Pick: South Carolina

Score: Georgia, 35-14

Army vs. AIR FORCE (56 1\2)

Child "locks" loves this under-inducing battle of run-oriented, service academy schools that will be handing off in 20-to-30 mph winds at Colorado Springs. He'll be watching the clock go "tick, tick, tick."

Take: UNDER

Last week: 1-5

Season: 22-33
