It’s mangled cliché desperation time. My back is against the driver’s seat. I don’t control my own destination and even tried taking it one game at a time before realizing now is not the time to pull any more punches. It’s time to step up to the plate, go for the whole enchilada and not look back because someone named “Guido” might be gaining on me. Since I hail from Pac 12 country, where the commissioner is named Scott, it is time for me to throw a “Hail Larry.” Time is running out on my first year of game picking and here I sit two games under .500. It’s fourth and long from my own two and now I need to go the whole nine yards. It’s all or nothing and win or go home with a Tommy-gun burst of point-spread spray guaranteed to go down your road and loosen your load. My games this week are South Florida-SMU, Wyoming-SD State, Utah-Oregon and Kansas State-Baylor. Plus five “over” bonus picks you can take to Wells Fargo. The game: SOUTHERN METHODIST getting 13 vs. South Florida
The pick: SMU, 40-37.
The comment: This should be a fun game featuring two high-wire offenses but I like what SMU is doing under Chad Morris. The Mustangs, remember, already have a win this year over Houston.
The game: WYOMING getting 10 vs. San Diego State.
The pick: Wyoming. (Score: San Diego State 30-25)
The comment: San Diego State has flown under the radar this year and boasts the nation’s leading rusher in Donnel Pumphrey. But Laramie is a tough place to play—ask Boise State.
The game: UTAH giving 10 vs. Oregon
The pick: Utah, 50-30
The comment: Utah is battling for the Pac 12 South title while Oregon is in free fall with a defense allowing 43 points per game. Oh, and Utah scored 62 points against a much better Oregon team last year in Eugene.
The game: Kansas State giving 2 at BAYLOR
The pick: Kansas State, 30-27
The comment: Kansas State hasn’t defeated Baylor since 2011 but this will be the year. The Bears are in free-fall after 6-0 start and have now lost star quarterback Seth Russell to a season-ending injury.
Bonus Picks: Betting the “over” this year has been the way to go because college football is just that crazy. So we think these lines are too low:
South Florida at SMU (74)
Oklahoma at West Virginia (66 1\2)
Arizona State at Washington (64 1\2)
Stanford at California (65 1\2)
UCLA at USC (52 1\2)
Virginia Tech at Notre Dame (55 1\2)
Last week: 2-2
