Rankman's Picks: Week 4

duf

“Eureka (I have found it),” is reportedly what Greek math whiz Archimedes said when he figured out the purity of gold. It is also the state motto of California and, starting this week, the secret sauce slogan for Rankman’s weekly picks. After groveling to a 4-8 start and embarrassed to show his face in private, Rankman punted back to the punters and established a new strategy. He eschewed (gesundheit) the brand names and picked “Little Guy” games only the depraved and smart guys care about. The result was a 4-2 mark and a new lease on, if not life, a new car with white side walls. This could be the start of something big, or small, but it’s definitely not time to stop. So here, sticking with the theme, are this week’s picks.

The Games

Army getting 2 at TULANE

Georgia State giving 2.5 at CHARLOTTE

UAB getting 11 at NORTH TEXAS

LATE FRIDAY BONUS: UTEP getting 17 at NEW MEXICO STATE

OVER\UNDER

Army getting 2 at TULANE

Both teams are coming off wipeout losses to Power 5 powers, Ohio State and Oklahoma. In this one, though, Team USA’s power option run offense should be able to control and cover against Tulane’s No. 82 ranked rush defense. Army gained 500 yards against Fordham this year…without completing a forward pass.

Pick: Army

Score: Army 25-20

Georgia State giving 2.5 at CHARLOTTE

Georgia State has been a sympathetic piñata all week after a 56-0 loss to Penn State in which James Franklin called time out (or did he) to ice the Panthers’ kicker to protect a shut. Look for Georgia State to take it out on a truly bad Charlotte team that lost last week to a phone company (North Carolina A&T)

Pick: Georgia State

Score: Georgia State, 27-24

UAB getting 11 at NORTH TEXAS

The Mean Green of Denton played Iowa into the fourth quarter last week. UAB is just starting up football again and isn’t very good at it.

Pick: North Texas

Score: North Texas, 35-20

LATE PICK: UTEP getting 17 at NEW MEXICO STATE

Yes, UTEP has lost to Oklahoma and Arizona by the combined score of 129-23 and yes, UTEP lost to Rice, which is simply lost. But Rankman woke up from a Friday nap with a premonition UTEP's Miners were going to cover.

Pick: UTEP

Score: New Mexico State, 35-23

OVER\UNDER

Hawaii at WYOMING (57)

Hawaii gave up 56 to UCLA while Wyoming allowed 40-plus at home last week to Oregon.

Take: OVER

Idaho at SOUTH ALABAMA (54)

Idaho, despite three turnovers, scored 28 last week in a loss at Western Michigan. South Alabama put up 45 in a win over Alabama A&M. Oh, and Idaho beat USA last year, 38-31. It all adds up.

Take: OVER

Florida International at RICE (54)

These teams might have trouble scoring in Amsterdam’s Red Light district. FIU is averaging 17 points per game to Rice’s 13.5. You do the math (it won't take long).

Take: UNDER

Last week: 4-2
