Gould Standard Pick Six: Week 6

Oh, well. Another 3-3 week. But it coulda-shoulda-woulda been so much better.

Herb,8-13,best, sized

Indiana, up 24-7 at the half, wins 24-17 and fails to cover 17 points against hapless Rutgers . . . Georgia, up 24-0 in the third quarter and poised to cover 31 points, loses its bark and its bite in a 38-12 win . . . Mighty Michigan gets mugged early by struggling and injured Northwestern, a 14-point dog, and trails 17-0 before pulling out a 20-17 escape.

Those are ``mistakes’’ I would probably make over and over again.

Enough whining. On to this week’s picks, a combination of best teams and counter-intuitive prognostication.

THE PICKS

Alabama minus-35 at Arkansas, 11 a.m., ESPN

Alabama hasn’t been covering lately but let’s face it. The spreads have been bigger than the Golden Corral. I just have a hunch the Crimson Tide will feast on the struggling Razorbacks. And 35 is a relatively manageable number for the Saban Machine.

The Pick: Alabama

The Score: Crimson Tide, 52-10

Illinois minus-5½ at Rutgers, 11 a.m., BTN

This is probably the last best chance for these two bottom-feeders to salvage a win this fall. Rutgers is coming off a good second half vs. Indiana. Illinois is coming off a great first half vs. Penn State, and a bye week. I’m going with Lovie’s beard. Illini break their 13-game Big Ten losing streak. Key stat: Kansas rushed for 405 vs. Rutgers. Illini ran for 245 vs. Penn State. 405? Blau wants to bet pizza on that run defense. And I thought 405 was the highway in Dufresne’s neck of the woods.

The Pick: Illinois

The Score: Illinois, 31-24

Maryland plus-17½ at Michigan, 11 a.m., ABC

The evidence suggests that Maryland will hang around. The Terps are better and Michigan is not living up to expectations. The thing is, this is college football, not a court of law. My hunch says Michigan will roll at home.

The Pick: Michigan

The Score: Wolverines, 42-20

Iowa minus-6 at Minnesota, 2:30 p.m., BTN

P.J. Fleck will have his Gophers inspired. Hey, this is for the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy. The Hawkeyes will want to keep the bronzed pig in Iowa City for the fourth straight season. And they have a much better defense. But Minnesota will keep it close.

The Pick: Minnesota

The Score: Iowa, 20-17

LSU minus-2½ at Florida, 2:30 p.m., CBS

These teams don’t like each other. If everybody’s emotional, give me the more accomplished team. Florida’s improving, but LSU has improved.

The Pick: LSU

The Score: LSU, 27-23

Nebraska plus-17½ at Wisconsin, 6:30 p.m., BTN

Everybody’s piling on against Nebraska, even coach Scott Frost, who was seething after the Huskers’ home loss to Purdue. Now they’re going up against the well-oiled machine of Wisconsin. And BTN decided this game is ready for prime time.

The Pick: Wisconsin

The Score: Badgers, 35-10

Notre Dame minus 5½ at Virginia Tech, 7 p.m., ABC

I don’t know much about the Hokies. I don’t know why they’re ranked. I don’t know how they could lose to Old Dominion. And how they could beat Duke without their injured quarterback. I do know that Notre Dame has scored 94 points the last two weeks after managing only 70 in its first three games. And I am getting the feeling it’s Notre Dame’s year.

The Pick: Notre Dame

The Score: Irish, 31-21
