If you believe, as Damon Runyon said, that everything in life is 6-to-5 against, then last week’s 3-3 record beat the odds.
Hats off to Michigan, Ohio State and Alabama for winning big. The Badgers, sad to say, came up four points short of winning big. Well, minus-35 big, anyway.
Fresno State and Purdue? No soup for you.
Let’s see what the future brings. I'm so excited I'm going to Pick Seven this week. And if that makes everything in life 7-to-6 against, so be it.

Oklahoma minus-17½ at Iowa State
Iowa State shocked the Sooners 38-31 in Norman last year. What does that mean this year? Let’s go with: The Cyclones get Oklahoma’s attention.
The Pick: Oklahoma
The Score: Sooners, 35-14
South Florida minus-10 vs. Illinois
Yeah, it’s Illinois hosting South Florida at Soldier Field, where the Illini are 0-3 in past attempts to put on a show for their Chicago alumni. This time, the Illini are banged up. And this would have been a tough deal if they were healthy.
The Pick: South Florida
The Score: South Florida, 31-17
Duke plus-6½ at Baylor
Injuries to Blue Devils QB Daniel Jones and CB Mark Gilbert have pushed this line Baylor’s way. But the Duke I saw in its 21-7 win at Northwestern is very solid. Give me the points. And don’t rule out another Duke win.
The Pick: Duke
The Score: Blue Devils, 24-21
Boise State plus-2½ at Oklahoma State
This top-25 matchup between the No. 17 Broncos and the No. 24 Cowboys has a Western theme. I’ll ride with QB Brett Rypien to keep Boise State’s Bronco-busting goal of a Pick Six berth intact. And. . . they’re getting points.
The Pick: Boise State.
The Score: Broncos, 34-31
Alabama minus-21 at Ole Miss
Alabama at Ole Miss, O/U 71
Now here’s a serious shootout. Ole Miss beat Texas Tech 47-27 and Southern Illinois 76-41. And Alabama is averaging 54 points a game. Here are the numbers I’m looking at: First, 66-3, the score of the Tide’s win vs. the Rebels last year. Second, 2, the number of quarterbacks Bama will use. They will be intent on strutting their stuff for St. Nick. Sounds like cover 21 to me. But the astronomical over/under of 71 is irresistible. I’m doubling down. Give me both
Two Picks: Alabama and The Over
The Score: Alabama, 58-21
Arizona State minus-5 at San Diego State
After ASU followed up its opening rout with a win vs. Michigan State, give me a seat on the Herm Edwards bandwagon. But give me San Diego State and the points. The Aztecs are no slouches.
The Pick: San Diego State
The Score: Sun Devils, 20-17
LAST WEEK: 3-3
