THE GOULD STANDARD/Pick Six: Week 12

Coming off a good week, we span the globe to give you the thrill of victory. And the agony of—well, let's hope not.

A 6-2-1 effort last week was much needed. But I’m not gonna yell, “Stop the presses!’’ Because TMG doesn’t have presses. It has cookies.

Not gonna lie. I enjoyed that 6-2-1 for more than 24 hours. But now it’s over. Next week is here—except in the SEC. And there are a lot of befuddling matchups.

In my continuing effort to help you get ahead of the Pick Six chains, I’m gonna pick 10 this week.

Gulp.

THE PICKS

Northwestern plus-1 at Minnesota, 11 a.m., BTN

Don’t know which Gophers will show up. The ones who beat Purdue by 31 last week or the ones who got smoked at Illinois(!) by 24 two weeks ago. This would be a dopey place forNorthwesternto have its five-game Big Ten winning streak halted.

The Pick: Northwestern

The Score:  Wildcats, 31-27

Penn State minus-28 at Rutgers, 11 a.m., BTN

I know the Nittany Lions aren’t elite. Might not even be great. ButPenn Stateis fully capable of punching Rutgers in the mouth and taking its lunch money. All of that suff. And Penn State is due.

The Pick: Penn State

The Score: Nittany Lions, 42-10

Michigan State minus-1½ at Nebraska, 11 a.m., FOX

Nebraska is a hot commodity right now and due. Then again, Sparty’s defense is a lot less porous than Illinois’. Mark Dantonio is nobody’s sweetheart in games like this. And I keep thinking about Scott Frost’s pre-season warning: You better get us now.Michigan Statewill.

The Pick: Michigan State

The Score: Sparty, 24-20

Syracuse plus-10 vs Notre Dame, 1:30 p.m, NBC

If I was betting actual money, this is a game I. . . would not bet. But since it’s just for pride—and because nobody cares about the over/under on Utah-Colorado—I’m gonna weigh in here. If I picked this game 10 times, it would be five times each way. Only once? As impressive as the Orange offense is, Notre Dame is on a date with playoff destiny. ButThe Cusecovers.

The Pick: Notre Dame

The Score: Irish, 38-30

Wisconsin plus-4½ at Purdue, 2:30 p.m., BTN

The Badgers have lost three straight Big Ten road games (at Michigan, Northwestern and Penn State). Before that they won an amazing 16 of 17 conference road games. Those are the facts. Here’s the analysis. Their last road win came at Iowa, which wears gold and black. Purdue’s colors also are gold and black.Wisconsinwill grind one out here.

The Pick: Badgers

The Score: Wisconsin, 23-20

West Virginia minus-4½ at Oklahoma State, 2:30 p.m., ABC

Some people believe that Oklahoma State left it all on the field—well, most of it, anyway—on the Bedlam field last week. Some people believe the Mountaineers might be looking ahead to next week’s Oklahoma showdown. Letdown tends to trump look-ahead in my book. But most importantly.West Virginiais firing on all cylinders.

The Pick: West Virginia

The Score:  Mountaineers, 42-35

Boston College minus 1½ at Florida State, 2:30 p.m., ESPN2

This is a sentimental pick for Blau. And maybe even an unprecedented pick: Have we ever been able to sayBoston Collegewill cover on the road at Tallahassee?

The Pick: Boston College

The Score: BC, 31-23

Duke plus-29 at Clemson, 6 p.m., ESPN

Remember last week, when Northwestern was getting a ridiculous 10 points at Iowa? This is this week’s head-scratching line. Some people even thinkDukehas a chance to win. I won’t go that far. But I will say the Dukies stay within four touchdowns.

The Pick: Duke

The Score:  Clemson, 45-28

Cincinnati plus-7 at UCF, 7 p.m., ABC

The Bearcats are vey good. Some experts think they’re even good enough to save the world from further UCF/playoff debates. Even though that debate makes me yawn, the Knights won’t be accommodating.Central Floridagets it done.

The Pick: UCF

The Score: Central Florida, 38-24

Iowa State plus-3½ at Texas, 7 p.m., LHN

My friends at The Athletic say Matt Campbell is 5-2 in his last seven games against Top 25 opponents and 3-0 in those games away from Ames. I say the Cyclones have a good defense, too.Iowa Statesays, “Surprise.’’

The Pick: Iowa State

The Score: Cyclones, 27-24
