The Gould Standard Pick Six: Week 7

The good news. . . Blau, aka Jersey Guy, owes me, Land of Lincoln Guy, pizza, courtesy of Illinois’ romp past Rutgers. I also did well elsewhere on the Midwestern front, where Notre Dame and Michigan covered against VaTech and Maryland.

Herb,8-13,best, sized

The gut checks. . . Alabama and Wisconsin gave up late ``meaningless’’ TDs against Arkansas and Nebraska. That meant Bama, a 35-point favorite, won by 34; and the Badgers, a 17½-point favorite, won by 17. I also made a last-minute switch and took Minnesota to cover six points against Iowa.

That, boys and girls, is how you turn a 6-1 triumph into 3-4 quicksand.

As a really sharp city editor once told me when I was still a news guy chasing fires and murder verdicts, ``The future lies ahead.’’

On to this week’s picks, a combination of heavy favorites, plus a couple of underdog devils I know. I think.

THE PICKS

Minnesota plus-29½ at Ohio State, 11 a.m., FS1

The Gophers are 2-28 vs. Ohio State since 1966. Let’s roll with 2-29—and I expect the Buckeyes’ defense to show better after last week’s slog past Indiana.

The Pick: Ohio State

The Score: Buckeyes, 52-10

Duke plus-3 at Ga Tech, 11:20 a.m., ACCNE

The Dukies I saw at Northwestern early looked like kings to me. They’ve had a week off to get ready for Tech’s option shenanigans.

The Pick: Duke

The Score: Blue Devils, 34-24

Pitt plus 21 at Notre Dame, 1:30 p.m., NBC

There’s always a concern about a letdown in a game like this, especially with Notre Dame giving three touchdowns. But the Panthers have been giving up points in bunches, and their leading tackler, middle linebacker Clinton Wirginis, went down with a season-ending knee injury in practice Tuesday. Plus, the Irish are on an offensive roll in Ian Book’s three starts.

The Pick: Notre Dame

The Score: Irish, 42-17

Purdue minus-10½ at Illinois, 2:30 p.m., FS1

I honestly don’t understand this line. The Illinois that won at Rutgers after playing well into the third quarter against Penn State (and never mind that it ended badly) getting double digits at home? The problem is, I like what Jeff Brohm is doing at Purdue. And Purdue isn’t Rutgers.

The Pick: Purdue

The Score: Purdue, 38-24

Michigan State plus 13½ at Penn State, 2:30 p.m., BTN

Here’s the thing about Michigan State’s gaudy run defense, which is allowing just 33.8 yards a game. Northwestern was very OK with running for 8 net yards if it could throw for 373 and win. Whether by air or by land, it’s points (and Ws) that matter. Penn State QB Trace McSorley is going to have a big day. Plus, Sparty has been in a funk all season.

The Pick: Penn State

The Score: Nittany Lions, 48-21

Wisconsin plus-9½ at Michigan, 6:30 p.m., ABC

The Badgers’ defense, which gave up a whopping 407 passing yards to Nebraska last week, misses those seven departed starters. Plus, two of Wisconsin’s top three cornerbacks, Deron Harrell (head) and Caesar Williams (leg), are questionable. And Michigan, which does its best work at home, really needs a signature win like this. But this line is too big. Wisconsin will hang around.

The Pick: Wisconsin

The Score: Michigan, 35-27
