The Gould Standard Pick Six: Week 9

This week’s theme: 7 and 7. And 7 and . . . 6½.

No, it’s not a drinking game, although it could lead to one. It’s about the four teams I’m seeing that are basically getting a touchdown—that are basically good enough to win even though they are getting a touchdown.

Those of you who are familiar with my picking acumen know that they won’t all win. Maybe none will. But in which of those games will I take the underdog bait?

Northwestern? Iowa? Florida? Kentucky?

Read on.

And speaking of drinking games. Will Purdue have a hangover at Michigan State?

We’ll take a look at these games, and a couple of other curiosities.

Because even though we call it Pick Six, they still kick the extra point after the six. Why not us?

Sounds like Pick Seven to me. And it fits with this week’s scheme. I mean, theme.

THE PICKS

Wisconsin minus-7 at Northwestern, 11 a.m., FOX

We know the Badgers will pound the ball, especially amid reports that Alex Hornibrook may be sidelined by a concussion issue. We think Clayton Thorson will bounce back from a bad passing day at Rutgers against Wisconsin’s banged up secondary. We believe the Wildcats will keep it close.

The Pick: Northwestern

The Score: Wisconsin, 27-24

Purdue plus-2 at Michigan State, 11 a.m., ESPN

Tricky game here. Everyone’s anointing Purdue and Jeff Brohm after the big win over Ohio State. Everyone’s writing off Michigan State after the ugly loss to Michigan. The thing, this is the kind of game where Mark Dantonio and the Spartans bounce back snarly. If Sparty doesn’t win here, the wheels start to come off. And this has all the makings of a hangover game for the Boilermakers. Tie-breaker: Purdue is having fun. And it sure looks like the better team.

The Pick: Purdue

The Score: Boilermakers, 31-27

Florida plus-7 vs. Georgia, 2:30 p.m., CBS

The way Florida has been playing, this is a game that the Gators could win without shocking the world. I don’t know that they’ll win. But I can’t resist a team with Florida’s resume getting a touchdown.

The Pick: Florida

The Score: Georgia 35-31

Iowa plus-6½ at Penn State, 2:30 p.m., ESPN

Here’s another in our series of capable underdogs getting a touchdown. Maybe Penn State, which has lost its last two home games, will erupt on offense. But there’s no doubt that Iowa comes in playing very stout defense.

The Pick: Iowa

The Score: Penn State, 30-24

Illinois plus-17½ at Maryland, 2:30 p.m., BTN

Every time news flares up about its off-the-field woes, Maryland seems to up its game. But the Terrapins are a woeful passing team. And Illinois, for all of its problems, can do some things when it stays out of its own way. Enough things, anyway, to not get blown out. Heck, the Illini even have a shot at their second Big Ten win.

The Pick: Illinois

The Score: Terrapins, 38-28

Kentucky plus-7 at Missouri, 3 p.m., SEC

Everybody’s down on Kentucky because its passing game was a no-show in that 14-7 win over Vanderbilt. Yeah, the Wildcats are gonna need more passing, and more points, against aerial ace Mizzou’s aerial ace, Drew Lock. But they’ve shown me they’ll show up in the Show Me State. So give me the touchdown.

The Pick: Kentucky

The Score: Wildcats 31-30

Texas A&M plus-2½ at Mississippi State, 6 p.m., ESPN

Between this head-scratching line and Jimbo Fisher’s jaw-dropping contract, put me down for Texas A&M. Jimbo Fisher can afford a lot of things, but he can’t afford to lose here. And the Aggies bring more than enough defensively to quiet the passing game of Nick Fitzgerald, even in Starkville.

The Pick: Texas A&M

The Score: Aggies, 35-31
