The Gould Standard Picks: Week 11

Coulda. Shoulda. Woulda.

Let’s get this over with quickly. Because as the great philosopher Ron Zook once said, ``Nobody cares.’’

Your humble picker drank too much Ohio State/Penn State Kool-Aid last week. He also was suckered by the Badgers’ hospital ward of an injury report. He changed channels, only to discover later that Notre Dame had given up a ``meaningless’’ touchdown in the final minute. And finally, Alabama’s offense left me and Nick Saban muttering.

And that, my friends, is how you turn a good week (4-2 straight up) into a 1-5 disaster against the dreaded Spread.

We’re still above water at 32-28 on the season.

Time to move on. . .

Good luck in sports.

THE PICKS

Michigan State plus-17 at Ohio State

Not an easy call here, not with this whopping big line. Seems like the Buckeyes ought to be juiced to bounce back after the worst defeat of the Urban Meyer regime. But Michigan State, which is excited to be in the hunt to win the Big Ten East, is solid on defense. And getting 17.

The Pick: Michigan State

The Score: Ohio State, 35-21

Purdue plus-4 at Northwestern

The question is, why is Northwestern No. 25 in the CFP poll after beating No. 12 Michigan State and No. 20 Iowa during its current four-game winning streak? The answer is: Who knows? But there’s no question that Northwestern will take care of business here.

The Pick: Northwestern

The Score: Northwestern, 31-21

Nebraska plus-2-1/2 at Minnesota

The Gophers have hit the wall offensively, managing just 10 points in each of their last two games. Nebraska, coming off an overtime disappointment vs. Northwestern, is holding up well enough despite the turmoil surrounding embattled coach MIke Riley.

The Pick: Nebraska

The Score: Nebraska, 20-17

Michigan minus-16-1/2 at Maryland

Since going with Brandon Peters at QB, Michigan has pumped some life into its sluggish offense. The Terrapins are struggling against the run and have quarterback problems. Coach Khaki Pants is building for finales against Wisconsin and Ohio State.

The Pick: Michigan

The Score: Michigan, 34-14

Georgia minus-2-1/2 at Auburn

Dangerous game for Georgia. But if the Dawgs are who we think are, they should prevail in what’s likely to be a vintage SEC grind-it-out showdown.

The Pick: Georgia

The Score: Georgia, 20-17

Notre Dame minus-3 at Miami

Nice win vs. Va. Tech got Miami out of the winning-ugly syndrome. And the Hurricanes are looking like a gritty team of destiny. Thinking their QB will have trouble against the Irish defense in this game, though. And if Notre Dame RB Josh Adams, who says his non-football-related headaches are gone, is right, the Irish, who are solid all-around, seem to be riding with destiny, too. And they have a higher ceiling than the ‘Canes.

The Pick: Notre Dame

The Score: Notre Dame, 35-31
