The Gould Standard picks: Week 12

Stuck in a rut here. You know it’s really uncomfortable when you make a set of picks, and realize you easily could make a case for going the opposite way in every single game.

What’s even worse is when you can look back at wrong picks and say, ``I’d do it the same way again.’’ That’s the definition of college football insanity.

But on the bright side, I’ve noticed that a lot of ``experts’’ have been making the same picks as me. With the same results. And last week’s 2-4 was an improvement on the previous week’s 1-5. And at 34-32, I remain determined to finish strong.

Good luck in sports.

THE PICKS

Michigan plus-7-1/2 at Wisconsin

It’s so tempting to take the points. Hornibrook has thrown 11 interceptions in seven games, including three last week (two for pick-sixes!) against offense-less Iowa. And yet, the Badgers pound the ball so well, and play stonewall defense. What’s a value-conscious alum who holds his alma mater to a higher standard to do? Michigan keeps it close.

The Pick: Michigan

The Score: Wisconsin, 23-20

Rutgers plus-11 at Indiana

Unless there’s scarlet or crimson or a tomato patch in your closet, there should be no reason to get involved in this game. Except that I have consistently over-rated Indiana and consistently resisted the urge to over-rate Rutgers. Give me the Scarlet Knights and the points.

The Pick: Rutgers

The Score: Indiana, 31-23

Minnesota plus-7-1/2 at Northwestern

Northwestern is on a roll, winning five in a row. And it remembers last year, when a toe stub at Minnesota jeopardized its bowl prospects. Last week's Gopher rout of Nebraska said a lot more about Nebraska than Minnesota.

The Pick: Northwestern

The Score: Northwestern, 27-17

Navy plus-18 at Notre Dame,

It would be easy to fall off the Notre Dame bandwagon this week. Navy brings its vaunted triple option, and the Irish are regrouping after seeing their playoff hopes go down the Hard Rock Stadium drain. Except that the Midshipmen are banged up, especially at QB. and Irish defensive coordinator Mike Elko has experience playing against Army’s option. Making their New Year’s Six case, the Irish don’t mess around.

The Pick: Notre Dame

The Score: Notre Dame, 45-20

Purdue plus-7-1/2 at Iowa

Part of me says, `Iowa giving 7-1/2 is like other teams giving 27-1/2.’ But the Hawkeyes are the better team. Purdue is running on fumes, when it runs at all. So, a big wave to the children’s hospital. the Hawkeyes cover.

The Pick: Iowa

The Score: Iowa, 27-17

Maryland plus-16 at Michigan State

Which Sparty is coming to this party? The one that stifled Penn State at home? Or the one that was roadkill at Ohio State. No place like home. Doesn’t matter what quarterback the Terrapins will pull out of their hat this week. It won’t be magic against Michigan State.

The Pick: Michigan State

The Score: Michigan State, 38-18

UAB plus-10-1/2 at Florida

Two years ago, UAB didn’t have a program. Some angry Gators fans would argue that at the moment, Florida doesn’t have a program. The Blazers might be the most popular underdog this week. Who am I to argue with that?

The Pick: UAB

The Score: UAB, 27-24
