The Gould Standard Picks: Week 13

Things to be thankful for this week: Golf weather in Chicago in late November. And college football picking, which will drive you nuts, is nearing the end of this season.

I am weary of studying and calculating, only to see Michigan AND Michigan State fumble on the 1 yardline, blowing up two of my picks. I want to live in a world where we don’t have to choose betweeen Rutgers and Indiana. In football.

I am tired of trying to figure out why Iowa can put up 55 points against Ohio State, but only 35 points against Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue combined.

I am thankful, though, that it’s time to move on from last week (6-1 straight up, 1-6 ATS) to this week’s madness. I am also hopeful this week will go better.

Hope you're having a great Thanksgiving weekend.

Good luck in sports.

THE PICKS

Iowa minus-3 at Nebraska

I’ve been wrong about the Hawkeyes all season. In this case, I still believe they are the better team, even if their offense doesn’t show it. I do wonder, though, if Nebraska will decide to man up.

The Pick: Iowa

The Score: 20-13

Miami minus-14 at Pitt (fri)

The Hurricanes have well-known tendency to make games more interesting than we expect. So does Pitt.

The Pick: Pitt.

The Score: Miami, 31-23

Northwestern minus-16-1/2 at Illinois

Yes, it’s possible Illinois will keep it close. But it’s more likely that Northwestern will play well. The No. 22 Wildcats, who have won six in a row, are still under-rated.

The Pick: Northwestern

The Score: Northwestern, 45-20

Notre Dame minus-2 at Stanford

The Fighting Irish were a go-to pick in the first half of the season. Since then, they’ve played like they’re banged up. Stanford could be healthier (see Bryce Love). But give me this home dog. Not even sure this would be an upset.

The Pick: Stanford

The Score: Stanford, 31-28

Indiana plus-2-1/2 at Purdue

IU is coming off a really good win against Rutgers. Purdue is coming off a really good AT Iowa. I like what Jeff Brohm is doing in his first year. I also like the Boilermakers’ defense.

The Pick: Purdue

The Score: Purdue, 31-21

Ohio State minus-11-1/2 at Michigan

This is yet another game where everything we know screams, `Buckeyes!’ Even though we also know that this is the ultimate rivalry game, I’m sticking with Ohio State to cover a sizable number. Michigan would have to overcome too many problems. And the Buckeyes, who need to keep making their playoff case, ought to be doubly pumped for The Team Up North.

The Pick: Ohio State

The Score: Ohio State, 31-17

Alabama minus 4-1/2 at Auburn

Auburn has the best win to date, a pounding of Georgia, while the Crimson Tide didn’t live up to Nick Saban’s insane standards (or ours) vs. LSU and Mississippi State. But Saban will have the Crimson Tide ready to roll in this Iron Bowl.

The Pick: Alabama

The Score: Alabama, 30-23

Wisconsin minus-17 at Minnesota

This number is awfully big. The Badgers, who can win handily without covering, should be content with that. Meanwhile, the Gophers could sneak into a bowl bid with a win. And P.J. Fleck can work the Axe rivalry-game angle. Minnesota shows up strong enough at home.

The Pick: Minnesota

The Score: Wisconsin, 31-17
