A tidy 4-1 mark last week brought me over .500 on the season. I needed one more field goal by Wisconsin to run the Thanksgiving weekend table. Oh, well.
Championship weekend features a lot of high-stakes meetings, many of them at neutral sites, which levels the playing field.
Let’s take a look at Western Michigan-Ohio, Temple-Navy, Oklahoma State-Oklahoma, Penn State-Wisconsin and Virginia Tech-Clemson.[membership level="0"] The rest of this article is available to subscribers only - to become a subscriber click here.[/membership] [membership]
The Game: Western Michigan minus-19 vs. Ohio, 6 p.m. CT Friday in Detroit, (ESPN2).
The Pick: Western Michigan, 42-20
The Comment: Emotions will run high as Broncos try to cap unbeaten regular season, and assure best possible bowl, with Mid-American championship. It’s a big point spread, but P.J. Fleck has the horses.
The Game: Temple plus-3 at Navy, 11 a.m. Saturday, (ABC).
The Pick: Navy, 35-31
The Comment: Midshipmen will befuddle Temple’s strong defense with their effective and unusual attack.
The Game: Oklahoma State plus-11 at Oklahoma, 11:30 a.m. Saturday, (Fox).
The Pick: Oklahoma, 45-31
The Comment: The Sooners offense will need to bring its A-game, but that figures to happen. Baker Mayfield is in the hunt for a trip to the Heisman ceremony in New York. And, he has a great target in Dede Westbrook.
The Game: Wisconsin minus-3 vs. Penn State, 7 p.m. Saturday in Indianapolis (Fox).
The Pick: Wisconsin, 30-24
The Comment: The Badgers, who have been playing stout defense and pounding the ball on offense all season, will keep at it. Saquon Barkley’s apparent ankle injury could hamper the Nittany Lions.
The Game: Virginia Tech plus-10 vs. Clemson, 7 p.m. Saturday in Orlando, (ABC).
The Pick: Clemson, 38-24
The Comment: Hokies are having a very good year. But Clemson has the edge on both sides of the ball, and is intent on finishing what it started in last year's run to the national championship game.
