The Gould Standard Picks: Week 2

It’s always a tricky deal, showing confidence in a team this week that looked good last week. But unlike Week 1, at least we have something to make precarious assumptions on.

That’s this week’s premise, anyway, after a shaky opening week.

I was really tempted to weigh in on Oklahoma-Ohio State, where I like the Buckeyes. But I also like the Sooners QB. And Auburn-Clemson, except that there are too many unknowns when you’re talking about a supposedly ascending Auburn against a Deshaun-Watson-less Clemson. And how, exactly, do you separate Tigers from Tigers?

So let’s just stay in Big Ten Country.

Ohio plus-3-1/2 at Purdue

Pitt plus 20-1/2 at Penn State

Indiana minus-3 at Virginia

Northwestern at Duke (55)

Iowa at Iowa State (48)

Florida Atlantic at Wisconsin (57-1/2)[membership level="0"] The rest of this article is available to subscribers only - to become a subscriber click here.[/membership] [membership]

Ohio plus-3-1/2 at Purdue

Frank Solich—remember the Frank Solich ``era’’ at Nebraska?— is now in his 13th season in the ``other-other’’ Athens, which does not specialize in gyros or grits. I don’t care that the Bobcats beat Hampton 59-0 last week. The Boilermakers, who gave Louisville a run for its money, are chafing for victory.

The score: Purdue, 37-31.

Pitt plus 20-1/2 at Penn State

Three touchdowns seems like a lot, except for two things. Penn State remembers that Pitt won last year, which was pretty much the deal-breaker for the Nittany Lions’ College Football Playoff hopes. And Penn State has covered its last 11 games, the nation’s longest current streak. Plus, Penn State has a really potent offense. And it wants to keep flexing its top 10 muscle for CFP purposes.

OK, make that four things.

The score: Penn State, 45-21.

Indiana minus-3 at Virginia

Yup, this would be a better basketball game. And why, I wonder, is Virginia only 1-0 when it beat William AND Mary? Sorry, couldn’t resist. . . Seriously, I like the Indiana that put a scare into Ohio State, leading 14-13 at halftime. IU has a good passing game, and a defense-oriented head coach. And the forecast calls for good weather.

The score: Indiana, 31-21

Northwestern at Duke (55): take the OVER.

Iowa at Iowa State (48): take the UNDER

Florida Atlantic at Wisconsin (57-1/2): take the OVER.
