The Gould Standard picks: Week 5

Basking in my second straight week of going 5-1.

Nicely done, Iowa, for covering. Thank you for that big second half, Michigan. Good work, Middle Tennessee. Could have used one more field goal, Nebraska, but stuff happens. And good offensive work by Ohio State and Alabama, piling up over/under points.

Do you realize how many TMG subscriptions you could have treated your friends to if you had wagered a mere ??? Never mind. This is for amusement only.

And you’re only as good as your last week in the picking business. Which is why this shapes up as another perilous week.

The marquee games are few and far between. And this is the time of year when weird upsets start happening. I say `weird’ because certain teams start deviating from their form chart. Under-performers suck it up. Over-acheivers develop hidden nicks.

And it generally takes hindsight to identify these certain teams. So I’m sticking with trends in this week’s games.

Here they are:

THE GAMES

Iowa plus 3-1/2 at Michigan State

Georgia minus-7 at Tennessee

Ohio State minus-29-1/2 at Rutgers

Maryland plus 12-1/2 at Minnesota

THE OVER/UNDERS

Northwestern at Wisconsin (49)

Northern Illinois at San Diego State (45-1/2)[membership level="0"] The rest of this article is available to subscribers only - to become a subscriber click here.[/membership] [membership]

THE GAME PICKS

Iowa plus 3-1/2 at Michigan State

The whole world is scratching its head at this line. Iowa takes No. 4 Penn State to the wire while Sparty gets drilled at home by Notre Dame—and the Hawkeyes are underdogs? I’m sure it has something to do with Michigan State being at home, and being more athletic. But I’m on the Hawkeyes, straight-up.

The score: Iowa, 23-20

Georgia minus-7 at Tennessee

I’m thinking the Vols, who have not lived up to their hype, aren’t ready for this type of challenge. But mainly, I’m thinking that Georgia is poised for a breakout season and will win the SEC East.

The score: Georgia, 30-17

Ohio State minus-29-1/2 at Rutgers

The Scarlet Knights lost to the Buckeyes by 58 points a year ago, by 42 points two years ago and by 39 points in 2014. That’s what you call trending in the wrong direction.

The score: Ohio State, 49-10

Maryland plus 12-1/2 at Minnesota

Maryland has lost its top two quarterbacks (Tyrrell Pigrome and Kasim Hill) to season-ending knee injuries. Third man up, Max Bortenschlager, had a rough go in the final three quarters at UCF. The Gophers figure to give him more of the same. And by the way, Max Bortenschlager is the unlikeliest name for a QB since. . . Ben Roethlisberger.

The Score: Minnesota, 31-12

OVER/UNDER PICKS:

THE OVER/UNDERS

Northwestern at Wisconsin (49): Take the OVER

The Badgers are going to put up some points with with powerr running, and with a few passes mixed in. The Wildcats have enough offensive options. And they know they need to use them cleverly.

Northern Illinois at San Diego State (45-1/2): Take the OVER

The Aztecs’ darkhorse Heisman candidate, Rashaad Penny, will pile up some yards. But the gritty Huskies will hang around.
