The Gould Standard Picks: Week 9

Silly me. I was thinking Illinois and Rutgers would be spent from their epic showdown in Champaign. Either that, or they weren’t very good.

So what happens? The Illini score late and cover in Minnesota. And the Scarlet Knights shock Purdue outright.

As for Michigan keeping it close at Penn State, mea culpa.

That's my third straight week of 3-3. What's the old saying? Play .500 on the road, and win at home. We're coming home this week. I can feel it in my bones.

Onward.

Let’s take a look at three Big Ten games, including the Penn State-Ohio State monster, plus playoff hopefuls Notre Dame, Georgia and TCU.

Good luck in sports. . .

THE GAMES

Michigan State minus-2-1/2 at Northwestern

Indiana minus-4-1/2 at Maryland

N.C. State plus-7 at Notre Dame

Florida plus-13-1/2 vs. Georgia

THE GAME PICKS

Michigan State minus-2-1/2 at Northwestern

Two good defenses here suggest this game will be as tight as its line. Spartans should be stingier on defense, and a little more athletic all-around.

The score: Michigan State, 21-17

Indiana minus-4-1/2 at Maryland

Indiana has been battling, but has come up short in its four conference games, losing to four talented ranked teams. Now it’s the Hoosiers’ turn against the struggling Terrapins.

The score: Indiana, 31-23

N.C. State plus-7 at Notre Dame

The Wolfpack are having a fine season, and are especially solid on defense. But the Irish are on a roll. They need to make their College Football Playoff case, and their improving offense is multi-faceted enough to do just that.

The score: Notre Dame, 31-23

Florida plus-13-1/2 vs. Georgia

The World’s Largest Outdoor Ice Cream Social, or whatever they’re calling it these days, ought to be interesting—for a while. Gators have won 21 of the last 27 meetings, including the last three. But Georgia is the hot ticket this year, and maybe beyond. Kirby Smart is hitting his stride. And Florida has been under-performing.

The score: Georgia, 31-14

TCU minus-5-1/2 at Iowa State 2:30

Cyclones are having a really nice year, very solid on defense. But TCU is on a mission. If Horned Frogs keep winning, they’ll be in hunt for playoff berth. No toe stub here.

The score: TCU, 30-23

Penn State plus-6-1/2 at Ohio State

This is a really tough call. But as your TMG Big Ten guy, I want to—gulp—weigh in. My head tells me Ohio State has better overall talent, is at home coming off a bye and will be pumped after losing in State College last year. But my heart tells me that Penn State is a team of destiny, and it has the QB, RB and TE to get this done. My head also says, `Oh, hell, Take the 6-1/2 points.' . . . I also like the Under (57), but let’s not get carried away.

The score: Ohio State, 28-24
