A Jersey Guy's Picks: Week 3

OK. Week 2 produced a turnaround with a 4-2 record, which evened us at 6-6 for the season. Now it's time to move on.

The LockSmith was even better, reversing his 0-2 start with a 2-0 week.

So let's look at what we have.

The Picks

(A Jersey Guy)

SOUTH FLORIDA giving 17.5 vs. Illinois. South Florida has stumbled at the start of each of its first two games. Illinois has snuck past Ball State and Western Kentucky. Time for reality check for both schools.

South Florida 42, Illinois 15

SAN DIEGO STATE getting 9.5 Stanford. There is no question that Stanford is a quality Pac-12 team which simply got worn down by USC last week. But San Diego State is the best team in the Mountain West. Getting points at home looks like a good deal to us. Watch out for the upset.

Stanford 30 San Diego State 27

BYU getting 17 vs. Wisconsin. Wisconsin may be the best team in the Big Ten West and has cruised past Utah State and FAU. BYU is off to a sluggish start, losing two of its first three. But the Cougars are playing at home and 17 points is more than enticing.

Wisconsin 27, BYU 17

North Carolina/ODU O/U 57 Under

AlABAMA/Colorado State O/U 53.5 Over

TEMPLE/UMass O/U 52.5 Under

Record Last week: 4-2

Season to date 6-6

THE LockSmith

DUKE over Baylor, giving 14

Early in the college season is the best chance to jump on developing trends -- and this game provides exactly that opportunity. Duke is a solid 2-0 after last week's 41-17 rout of Northwestern, a game that saw redshirt sophomore QB Daniel Jones throw for 305 yards and two scores and rush for 108 and two TDs. The Blue Devils' defense did its part by limiting Northwestern to 22 rushing yards on 21 carries. Baylor is the flip side to that, opening at 0-2 after losses to Liberty and UTSA and looks to be in a free fall, allowing 585 yards in the opener and another 375 last week. Matt Rhule may eventually get it done in Waco but it will take time. A long time.

Home team in CAPS

Season to date: 1-1

Virginia Tech at EAST CAROLINA

Here's the danger with the under here: Virginia Tech was a 54-17 winner in this game last year and the Pirates have lost 10 of their past 11, with all of those losses by double digits. But this is ECU's last real chance at respectability, and a large home crowd for a ranked opponent could provide a lift. Plus, the Hokies still seem to be sorting things out on offense with Josh Jackson at QB, and last week's 27-0 win over Delaware was proof of that because of the sluggish play. This Tech offense is not last yer's. Not even close. This looks more like a high 40s total game.
