A Jersey Guy's Picks: Week 8

Well, the Friday night lights experiment didn't work very well. We went 1-2-1 in four games. Oh. well.

On Saturday we were back to the 2-1 route, getting fooled only by the ineptness of Notre Dame.

The LOCK-Smith also was fooled by Notre Dame.

So we charge forward.

Our games (Saturday only) this week are: Syracuse at Boston College, Wisconsin at Iowa and Texas at Kansas State.

The Game: Syracuse getting 5 at Boston College

The Pick: Boston College 28, Syracuse 24

The Comment: At first, we thought the idea of Syracuse coming off a solid upset of Virginia Tech, being an underdog to a Boston College team that was swamped by Va. Tech, 49-0 sounded ridiculous. But we factored in BC's desperation for an ACC win, Syracuse playing on the road in what has to be a letdown game and we feel that BC can actually win this game.

The Game: Wisconsin giving 3 at Iowa

The Pick: Wisconsin 27, Iowa 20

The Comment: Normally a let down game after a big let down in last week's loss to Ohio State. But the Badgers are still in the hunt for the Big 10 West title and possible rematch. Iowa is not nearly as good as it was a year ago.

The Game: Texas getting 3 at Kansas State

The Pick: Texas 24, Kansas State 21

The Comment: We still trust Texas the way we trusted Notre Dame, which could be dangerous. But the Longhorns will get one more chance to prove themselves and help save Charlie Strong's job.

Record last week: 3-3-1

Season to Date: 12-12-1

The LOCK-Smith

Wisconsin over IOWA, GIVING 3 1/2

A quick timeout after last week's loss picking the Pacifist Irish: Notre Dame is just not a well-coached team. There's certainly enough talent on this five-loss team. Maybe Brian Kelly's unending in-you-face approach has worn thin since no one ever sees him looking at himself in the mirror for losing four games or more in five of his seven seasons in South Bend.

Okay, onto this week's lock. We're supposed to think Iowa -- which beat Rutgers -- RUTGERS!! -- by a whopping seven points and Minnesota by seven is back because the Hawkeyes put up 49 against Purdue last week? If the ground game struggles, and it figures to against a tough Wisconsin run defense, C.J. Beathard isn't good enough to win a game with his arm. The only concern about the Badgers is their ability to bounce back after consecutive seven-point losses to top 5 B1G teams Michigan and Ohio State (how's that for a crossover schedule?).

Wisconsin showed it was capable of beating the Buckeyes and QB Alex Hornibrook, a redshirt freshman, only figures to improve the more he plays. Having a health Corey Clement again is huge for this Badgers offense too.
