Here at TMG we believe in having fun as much as we can, so let's start with some basic "do you know?'' questions (and no Google search is allowed) about our choice of Utah State as our Newsmaker of the Week.
OK. Time is up
Utah State is located in Logan, Utah, which is 82.5 miles north of Salt Lake City
Utah State's nickname is the Aggies.
The Aggies are coached by Matt Wells.
Utah State is a member of the Mountain West Conference Mountain Division
The Aggies record is 9-1. Of special interest to some folks, Utah State is also 9-1 vs. the spread.
They have also won 9 straight since narrowly losing in their opener to what then looked like a very good Michigan State team.
In a conference where Boise State, Fresno State and even San Diego State have received much of the attention, Utah State amazingly remains a mystery figure
If Mayday Sam Malone reopened his Cheers bar in anywhere but Logan, it is probably safe to say not everyone would know Utah State's nickname or much of anything else.
Again, we at TMG want to provide as much information as possible, here's some factoids.
Utah State's most prominent alumnus is probably Hall of Fame defensive tackle Merlin Olson, who was also known for his role in Little House on the Prairie. Legendary former BYU coach Lavell Edwards is also a Utah State alum.
Even more impressively is the way they have won. Since their loss to Michigan State, the Aggies have averaged 53.6 points per game, and 536.8 yards in total offense. They are off to their best start since the 1961 (Olson's last team). Utah State leads the country in 6 different categories and has had an amazing 22 scoring drives completed in less than a minute.
Leading this latest surge is Wells, who is part of the Utah State family. The former Aggie quarterback, gained some coaching experience at Navy, Tulsa, New Mexico and Louisville, before returning to Utah State as the QB coach in 2010. Three years later, Wells moved into the role of head coach when Gary Anderson resigned to become the head coach at Wisconsin.
Until this season, Utah State has been a roller coaster team, winning 19 games in Wells' first two seasons in Logan, but posting sub .500 seasons before this year's turn around, which is probably why the Aggies' climb had not generated much attention.
Certainly, the College Football Playoff selection committee has not shown the Aggies a lot of love, failing to list them in their Top 25 during their first two rankings, which is interesting since Fresno State WAS No. 23 n last week's rankings.
But with Saturday's 62-24 win over San Jose State, and Fresno's loss to Boise State last week, maybe the Aggies will get some committee love.
Which is something we at TMG are ready to do (especially with their record vs. the point spread) , which is why they are this week's TMG Newsmaker of the Week.
