Fitting the pieces together regarding the future of Boston College athletic director Brad Bates.
Once again another rumor surfaced from a BC backer in California stating that Bates was very much in the mix for the opening at San Diego State.
It was not a new rumor, which combined with the chatter coming from sources at BC which said that Bates' contract at BC ( which expires next June, would not be renewed), gives legs to any rumors concerning Bates' future.[membership level="0"] The rest of this article is available to subscribers only - to become a subscriber click here.[/membership] [membership]
And then then there was this fact: The search at San Diego State is being conducted by a firm run by former UConn, North Carolina State, Washington and Vanderbilt athletic director Todd Turner.
Turner was at Vanderbilt from 1996 to 2003. Bates was at Vanderbilt from 1985 to 2002, holding several jobs including the title of senior associate athletic director under Turner.
And there was this. BC just signed a deal to play a two-game football series with the University of Missouri. Missouri's new athletic director is Jim Sterk, who came to Missouri from....San Diego State.
Sterk left San Diego State on good terms. Sterk and Bates obviously talked in setting up the football deal.
And finally there is this, San Diego State basketball coach Steve Fisher will have tremendous input in the selection of the AD. Fisher came to San Diego State (after a one year NBA hiatus as an assistant) from Michigan and was hired by former Michigan head coach and athletic director Bo Schembechler. Brad Bates played for Schembechler at Michigan.
There are a lot of connecting dots.
Bates, whose career at Vanderbilt and Miami of Ohio was on the rise until he arrived at BC in 2012, could be a tough sell at another Power 5 conference school because of the Eagles' failures in football and basketball in the last few years. But his overall credentials are solid.
San Diego State reportedly is getting close to finalizing a deal, bringing in finalists for second and perhaps deal closing interviews. An announcement could be made in the next few days.
Which begs the questions of: Where is Brad Bates and where will he be working?[/membership]
